France's second-largest ISP, Free, reported a hack this weekend, following the discovery of supposed customer data being offered for sale on an online cybercrime marketplace.

Paris-based Free has warned that personal data was compromised in the breach, filed a criminal complaint with the public prosecutor, and notified France's cybersecurity agency, as reported by Le Monde on Saturday.

While the exact nature of the cyberattack is still unclear, the company reported that intruders targeted an internal management tool, leading to unauthorized access of 'personal data for certain subscriber accounts.

The company stated that impacted subscribers have been or will soon be notified by email, assuring that passwords, bank card details, and users’ communication contents were not compromised.

Free has yet to disclose the total number of individuals affected by the breach or provide a timeline for when it occurred.

Free's acknowledgment of the breach was prompted by a cybercriminal who listed what they claimed were two stolen databases from the company, affecting more than 19 million customers on a cybercrime forum.
