A cyberattack struck U.S. oilfield services company Halliburton (HAL.N) last Wednesday, according to a source familiar with the situation. Halliburton acknowledged an issue affecting certain company systems and is currently investigating the cause and impact of the disruption. The company is also collaborating with 'leading external experts' to resolve the matter, a spokesperson said.

The cyberattack appeared to disrupt business operations at Halliburton's north Houston campus and impacted some global connectivity networks, the source added, speaking on condition of anonymity due to a lack of authorization to discuss the matter publicly. As a precaution, the company has advised some employees to refrain from connecting to internal networks.

Houston, Texas-based Halliburton is a global leader in oilfield services, providing drilling solutions and equipment to major energy producers worldwide. At the end of last year, the company had nearly 48,000 employees and operated in more than 70 countries.

Cyberattacks continue to pose significant challenges for the energy sector. In 2021, ransomware hackers targeted the Colonial Pipeline, leading to a multi-day shutdown of a key fuel supply line. The FBI attributed the breach to a group known as DarkSide, resulting in soaring gasoline prices, panic buying, and localized fuel shortages.
