Abilene, Texas, has taken its IT systems offline following a cyberattack that led to server malfunctions.
City officials were alerted to unresponsive servers in the internal network on April 18. Following their incident response plan, they began disconnecting affected assets to secure the system.
The city has initiated an investigation with the help of external cybersecurity experts to assess the extent and nature of the breach.
"Our investigation is ongoing, and we continue to closely monitor our systems for any unusual activity," said a notice from the city. "Out of an abundance of caution, certain systems have been taken offline."
Emergency services remain operational, and water utility customers can still pay their bills. However, as systems and phone lines gradually come back online, response times to service requests may be delayed.
Due to a system outage, government offices are only accepting cash, checks, and online card payments—credit cards are temporarily out of service.
While the investigation is still in its initial phase, the city plans to release further information as more details emerge.
